How to Make Single-Ply Plastic Yarn (Plarn) Out of Grocery Bags

Plastic bags are everywhere, and instead of letting them pile up in your pantry or end up in the landfill, why not turn them into something useful? Plarn, or plastic yarn, is an eco-friendly material you can make yourself and use in various crafting projects, from durable shopping bags to mats and more. In this guide, I’ll walk you through how to create single-ply plarn using your everyday plastic grocery bags.

What you’ll need:

  • A stack of clean plastic grocery bags
  • Scissors
  • A flat surface for cutting

Step 1: Flatten the bags

Start by laying your plastic grocery bags flat on your work surface. Smooth out any wrinkles, ensuring the bags are as flat as possible. This will make the cutting process easier and more accurate.

Step 2: Remove the handles and bottom seams

Using your scissors, cut off the handles of the bag and the bottom seam. This will leave you with a rectangular tube of plastic.

Step 3: Cut the bag into strips

Next, fold the flattened bag lengthwise, and then cut the bag into strips that are approximately 1-2 inches wide. Be sure to cut evenly to keep your plarn consistent.

Step 4: Unfold the strips

After cutting, unfold the strips. You should now have a collection of plastic loops.

Step 5: Connect the loops

To create a continuous strand of plarn, connect the loops by tying them together. Take one loop and place it inside another, then pull one end of the first loop through the other loop. Pull tight to secure. Continue this process with all the loops until you have a long strand of plarn.

Step 6: Wind the plarn

Once all the loops are connected, wind your plarn into a ball to keep it organized and tangle-free. Now, you’re ready to use your plarn in any project where you’d typically use yarn!

Ideas for using plarn

Plarn is incredibly versatile and can be used for a variety of projects. Here are some ideas:

  • Crochet or knit reusable shopping bags: Sturdy and washable, these are perfect for groceries.
  • Create outdoor mats: Perfect for the porch or camping, plarn mats are durable and water-resistant.
  • Weaving projects: Incorporate plarn into your weaving for a unique texture and sustainability.

Benefits of using plarn

Not only does plarn help reduce plastic waste, but it also creates a strong and durable material that’s perfect for practical projects. Plus, it’s a great conversation starter and a way to show off your eco-friendly crafting skills!

Can dish scrubbies be made out of plain?

I haven’t personally used plarn for a dish scrubbie, but I would check on the biodegradability of the bag material to ensure it wouldn’t degrade fast with use of water and soap. A suggestion that may work is to pair your plarn with some sturdy cotton yarn and hold those together to create a dish scrubbie. Let me know if you end up trying it out!

Doesn’t seem like a good idea. The slick plastic isn’t abrasive enough to scrub very well and you’d literally be shredding plastic into the water supply.
