How to Do the Blanket Stitch: A Step-by-Step Guide

The blanket stitch is a versatile hand stitching technique that’s not only practical for joining two pieces of fabric but also adds a decorative touch to your projects. Whether you’re closing up seams or adding a decorative edge to felt crafts, this stitch is both functional and attractive. Here’s how to do it:

Materials needed:

  • Needle and thread: Use embroidery floss reduced to two strands for a sturdy stitch.
  • Thread snips or scissors: To cut your thread.
  • Fabric: Felt is a great fabric for practicing the blanket stitch.

Step 1: Prepare your needle and thread

Thread your needle with the embroidery floss. To start, make a knot at the end of the thread. Insert the needle into the center of the fabric’s edge to hide the knot inside, which ensures a clean finish without visible knots on the outside.

Step 2: Begin the first stitch

Bring the thread around the fabric edge, and insert the needle through both layers from front to back, leaving a small loop of thread. Before tightening, pass the needle through this loop, then pull it tight to form the first stitch. This creates the distinctive edge of the blanket stitch.

Step 3: Continue stitching

Continue working your way along the fabric edge. Insert the needle at even intervals through both fabric layers, always ensuring the needle passes through the loop before tightening each stitch. Keep the stitches as uniform as possible, although a slightly uneven stitch can add a charming, organic look to your project.

Step 4: Finishing the edge

As you stitch, you’ll notice a neat line forming along the edge of your fabric, with the loops visible on top. This method not only decorates the edge but also reinforces it, making it ideal for projects that will be stuffed, such as small plush toys, since it prevents stuffing from escaping.

Step 5: Secure the end

When you’ve completed stitching along the edge, secure the thread by making a small knot and hiding it within the fabric layers.

The blanket stitch is simple to learn but adds a polished look to any fabric project. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned crafter, this technique is a must-have in your sewing repertoire. Practice makes perfect, and soon you’ll be adding this decorative and functional stitch to all your fabric creations.
